Ultra High Relief Gold Coin to be released in 2009

Trial production of the "most beautiful" gold coin ever minted has begun.  The US government has authorized the US mint to make a special one ounce 24 kt, solid 99.9% gold coin for the year 2009.  This gold coin differs from the US Gold Eagle and Gold Buffalo Bison coins in that it is a modern version of the Super High-relief Double Eagle gold $20 piece made in 1907.

High relief means greater detail

A high relief gold coin is unique in that the details are raised much higher off of the surface of the coin.  To accomplish this extreme detail the mint has to strike the coins in high power presses multiple times.  The result is an ultra gold coin with extra detail and extra thickness caused by the high relief details.

Based on federal law these high relief gold coins can only be issued during the year 2009.  The public will be able to buy them from the US mint and coin dealers in early 2009.  This gold coin is destined to be popular due to its beauty and unique ultra high relief features.  (Read more below.)

US Mint Press release - July 2008 new coin announcement

2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin

The United States Mint has chosen the Nation's largest coin show in Baltimore, Md., this summer to provide a Golden Moment for visitors, unveiling the much-anticipated 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin-a modern version of what many call the most beautiful gold piece ever created - the 1907 Double Eagle.  The exhibit at the United States Mint booth will show the development of this modern masterpiece-from its origin as gold bars-through test strikes-to the finished, one-ounce 24-karat (.9999 pure) 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin.

Six bars of refined gold from the United States Mint at West Point will be featured as part of the exhibit.  Each gold bar contains 400 ounces of gold and weighs 27.5 pounds.

United States Mint Director Ed Moy will participate in the Opening Ceremony of the American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. ET and then officially open the United States Mint exhibit.  The news media are welcome.

produce, in quantity, the ultra high relief coin envisioned, but never fully realized, by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907.  The new collectible coin will be about 50 percent thicker than other United States Mint one-ounce gold coins to achieve the greater depth and relief to which Saint-Gaudens aspired.  Visitors will be able to feel the ultra high relief on plasters of the coin that will be featured at the exhibit.

The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin exhibit will remain throughout the week at the United States Mint booth on the bourse floor at the World's Fair of Money.  The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin will be available for sale to the public early next year. There will be no mintage limit.  The coins only will be issued in 2009.  The new 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin will have the designation of a nominal denomination of $20, but the sales price will depend on prevailing world gold prices.
